3D Scanning Design

3D scanning allows designers and engineers to accurately measure, reverse engineer, and design as-built items like hull bottoms or engine rooms. Recently, Ocean5 created a 3D model from scanned Point Cloud Data (provided by Neometrix) and designed new strakes for the Willis 54′ pictured to the right. With construction input from Willis Marine (original Builder) along with fabrication and installation of the new strakes by Whiticar Boat Works the Ocean5 designed strakes we were able to create a more efficient hull with a drier ride, and increased speed by 1-1/2 knots!

Ocean5 uses 3D scan data to import the data into our CAD software, where it is then used to design and create 3D models of existing boats and environments. Not only is the technology providing massive benefits for engineers, but it is also proving invaluable accuracy where traditional hand lofting of existing boats was labor intensive and not as accurate.
