Finite Element Analysis

Numerical Method Solving Engineering Problems

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a numerical method of solving engineering problems by breaking up a large system into smaller, simpler finite elements.  Simple equations are then applied to these small elements and the method approximates a global answer.

In the marine industry, typical construction shapes with their typical analysis methods are not always used.  Ocean5 encounters complex systems and structural designs in which the first principle assumptions cannot provide reliable answers.  This is where the team implements FEA.  For example, a hardtop can be made of fiberglass, metal piping, or both.  Ocean5 can take a 3D model of the hardtop and mesh the model into smaller elements with properties of fiberglass or metal.  The program can then use the input boundary conditions and loads to solve for structure displacement, stress, and even vibration modes.

Ocean5 has the expertise, experience, and technology required to guide you through the structural requirements of your vessel and each component therein.  Our team has reduced tooling risk by analyzing structures in the preliminary design phase, validated as-built structures, and providing warranty and field repair recommendations for builders.

Some examples of past analyses:

  • Hull bottom and stringers
  • Deck reinforcement
  • Engine Mounts Gyro installations
  • Hardtop, T-Top, and Marlin Towers – new designs and field fixes
  • Structural foundation vibration
  • Transom design for high HP vessels and bracket additions
  • Composite airplane floats
